When Sindy was released, she was streets ahead of the other fashion dolls of the time in the UK, much more trendy, both in her outfits and her fashionable hair style. Most dolls were issued in frilly flared skirts and dresses, with bubble curl hair or long pigtails, and high heels. Sindy wore jeans, sneakers and a bob !
Meanwhile in America, Barbie was going down a storm, a super glamourous 'model' with a sophisticated wardrobe of clothes. But in 1962, Ideal Toys introduced Tammy, a fashion doll completely different to Barbie, she was more a teenager, with 'soft' curves on her body, rather than Barbies tiny waist, long shaply legs and large pointing bust ! Tammy was to appeal to those parents and children that prefered the more 'homley' girl next door look, a much easier stereo type to aspire to for little children, more identifiable. She was popular, had a wardrobe of teenage clothes and seperates, a Mom and dad, little sister Pepper, Big brother Ted, Little bother Pete, Boyfriend Bud, and friend Misty. Pepper had freinds Dodi and Patti, and Pete had friend Salty. So there was quite a gang of dolls you could collect back then. Together with these went a car, a house, a Catamaran, bed and dressing table, Juke box for both Tammy and Pepper and Treehouse for Pepper.Their play value was enourmous.
When Pedigree decided to make a new fashion doll they were approached my Mattel so sell Barbie under licience in the UK. They did something they had never done before, and did a consumer survey to see what children and parents thought of her. The answer wasn't good, she 'scared' most children with her 'hard' look, and parents weren't keen on her 'far to grown up' look either. So Pedigree approached Ideal and asked if they could sell Tammy, they did the same survey and both parents and children loved her. So it was agreed they could market a doll like Tammy, but they must'nt use the name, although they were allowed to use Tammy's 'tag line'..'The Doll You Love To Dress'....
Little did they know that Tammy, would only last a mere 4 years or so, but the doll that was inspired by Tammy, Sindy, would still be being sold over 40 years later !
